Elgar The Music Makers
Stanford Shamus O’Brien Overture / The Revenge / Justorum Animae
Worcester Festival Choral Society . Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano) . Meridian Sinfonia . Peter Nardone (conductor)
An outstanding classical concert programme in the majestic surroundings of Worcester Cathedral, supported by one of the foremost British mezzo-sopranos – the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Sarah Connolly CBE.
“We are the music makers, / And we are the dreamers of dreams.” So run the evocative first lines of Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s 1874 poem about artistic creativity, Ode, which Worcestershire-born composer Edward Elgar used for his stirring 1912 choral work: The Music Makers. Elgar lovers will also spot several musical self-references to his other works within The Music Makers, including the much-loved Enigma theme.
Complementing this English classic is a trio of late Victorian works from Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford – his romantic comic opera Shamus O’Brien, the moving, unaccompanied motet Justorum Animae, and a stirring musical retelling of Tennyson’s poem The Revenge, depicting Sir Richard Grenville's heroic 1591 sea battle against the Spanish fleet
