CONCERTS FOR THE 2009/2010 SEASON
All concerts will be conducted by Adrian Lucas and will take place in Worcester Cathedral commencing at 7.30 p.m.
Saturday 20th March 2010
Vaughan Williams – A Sea Symphony
Richard Strauss – Four Last Songs
Vaughan Williams outstanding work was first performed at the Leeds Festival of 1910. Unlike other choral symphonies it is fully choral throughout, the orchestra having no independent part to play. The Sea Symphony is English choral music at its best. It is a visionary message of the superb coupling of words and music drawing a parallel with ships voyaging to their destination and the journey of the human soul.
The Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss (1864-1949) rank among the most haunting music ever composed. They were written for the great Wagnerian soprano Kirsten Flagstad and given their world premier in London in 1950.
A very engaging concert with which to end the season.
